Objective

In this activity, players work in small teams to form letters or numbers with their bodies. This activity is suitable for teaching young children the alphabet, simple spelling and basic maths in a fun way.

Instructions

1. Divide the class into pairs and have the class stand side-by-side next to their partner in the center of the room.

2. Explain to the children that the objective of the game is to form a letter or number that you are going to call out. There are two basic rules:

  • Only capital letters should be used.
  • Players must stop and be silent when they hear you say "freeze" on the fifth count.

It is fine to copy other players, but the most important thing is the speed by which numbers and letters are made.

3. Begin the game by saying: "Form the letter T ... 1, 2, 3, 4, Freeze!" or "Form the number 7 ... 1, 2, 3, 4, Freeze!" Students must stop and remain completely silent at the word "freeze" - even if they have not finished making the letter or number - otherwise they will not hear the next letter or number.

Variations

After the children are familiar with how to form separate letters and numbers, put three pairs together in a team and try the following:

Three Letter Words - each pair should do one letter each, while another team can call out the word.

Put five pairs together in a team and try the following:

Basic Maths - basic numbers using addition and subtraction can be done in the same way. For example 1 + 1 = 2 can be a bit more challenging, but you will be surprised at how inventive children can be.
