Objective

This esl/efl activity is a modified version of Twenty Questions. Students take turns asking questions or guessing what the person at the front is thinking.

Instructions

This is a fun esl/efl activity that can be played by all level of learners. It is particularly effective if you use it to help students practice such questioning techniques as "Does", "is it", "Can you/it" and so on.

1. Write down the names of every student on the board. Ask students to suggest 5 - 6 categories such as "country", "songs", "music" and so on. Write these categories up on the board.

2. Ask a volunteer to come up to the front of the class, and to think of something relating to one of these categories. Lets say he or she selects "Country" as the category, and "New Zealand" as the word . He/she writes this answer on a piece of paper and hands it to the teacher.

3. The class has 20 chances to guess or ask a "yes" or "no" question to find out what the mystery word is. The person in the front must truthfully answer "yes", "no" or "maybe". Points are scored based on these answers:

Point Scoring

  • If the answer is "no" the person in the front scores 1 point;
  • If they answer is "yes" the person asking the question scores 1 point;
  • A "maybe" answer (meaning they are unsure how to answer the question) scores no point.
  • If someone guesses the correct answer, they score 3 points and the game is over.

Example:
Joe: Is it a movie?
Ming: No! (Ming scores 1 point)
Francis: Is it a country?
Ming: Yes! (Francis scores 1 point)
Jun: Is it England?
Ming: No! (Ming scores 1 point) ...
