Materials: For each group, prepare a bag containing 5-6 unrelated objects.

Objective

Story in a Bag is an efl/esl activity that requires students to invent a story based on items they randomly select.

Instructions

1. Divide the class into small groups with about 4 to 5 students per group. Give each group the bags, which contains unrelated everyday objects such as a book, a cup, an envelope and so on.

2. Give teams a few minutes to make up a story to tell the class, or a role play that should be performed using all of their items. The story should involve every member of the group and it should be told with much drama and conviction.

Variations

Intermediate learners may require more time to prepare their story. Consider giving the activity as a homework assignment.

Another variation that works will with a new class is to tell everyone to bring a special item from home for their next class. The item might be a ring, a scrapbook or a toy. When learners meet for class, students should take turns sharing a short story of why the item is special to them.
