Objective

Battle Ship is an excellent pencil and paper game that predates WWI. It is also an excellent game for teaching numbers (1-10) and the alphabet (A-J).

Instructions

1. Divide the class into pairs and give each learner a work sheet.

2. Explain the following rules of the game:

(a) Ships must be drawn either horizontally or vertically, and must not overlap each other.
(b) The size of a ship determines how many squares it will take up. i.e Aircraft Carrier = 5 squares.
(c) During the game, take turns firing a shot at each other.
(d) If Student A calls out a square to Student B, and a ship occupies that square, Student B must say "hit". Student A gets another free go, otherwise student B must say "miss".
(e) Use X = for "hits" and "O" for "misses" as a reminder of your shots..
(f) When all ships are sunk the game is over.

3. Allow players to draw their ships. While drawing their ships, learners must not see each others worksheet.

Variations

To make the game go faster, learners can fire rounds according to how many ships they have.
