Objective
This activity is suitable for all age level. It involves students using future tenses and reported speech to have their fortunes told, and reporting this information to the class.
Instructions
1. Divide the class into pairs and have them seated facing each other around the room. Designate one person as the Fortune Teller, and the other as the person have his/her fortune told.
2. The person having his/her fortune told should ask the Fortune Teller something about their future. The Fortune teller takes their hand, looks at it searchingly and improvises an answer. Fortune tellers can volunteer more information if they want without having to wait for a question or prompting.
For Example
Jenny: Will I marry a handsome young?
Mimi: Yes he will be a young and handsome young man.
Jenny: Will he be rich?
Mimi: Yes he is very rich... but he is also a womanizer.
3. After the class has had their fortune told, the person having his/her fortune told should report their fortune to the class.
Variations
For more advanced players, reported or indirect speech can be practiced by having another pair ask the player having his/her fortune told what the Fortune Teller told them. The player should report this information to the class. For Example:
George: Jenny what did the Fortune Teller tell say to you?
Jenny: Well, she said that I'll marry a handsome young man, but that he'll be a great womanizer. And that we will have ten ugly children.
