| Materials: | Fake money and twenty grammar sentences (two thirds of which contains some grammar mistakes) |
Objective
Also known as Grammar Bid, in Grammar Auction students work in teams to bid fake money for correct sentences. Teams with that have the most money after the auction wins the game.
Instructions
When preparing the twenty grammar sentences, use grammar that you have recently taught or grammar that you would the like the class to review. If possible use fake currency from the particular country you are in for the activity.
1. Divide the class into teams of 4 or 5 players, and distribute a set amount of fake money and copies of the grammar sheet to the groups. Give learners about 10 minutes to read through and decide which of the sentences on their worksheets are grammatically correct, and which ones are incorrect.
2. The teacher begins the game by going through each sentence, and auctioning them off one-by-one. Groups work together to bid for grammatically correct sentences, while the teacher trys to sell the sentence to the highest bidder.
Rules for Bidding
- If the sentence is grammatically correct, the bidding team wins back the amount they bid for. However, if the sentence is incorrect, the team looses their money.
- A team can win back their lost bid if they are the first to correctly state the incorrect sentence.
- If a sentence is grammatically correct, but none of the other teams bid for it, they must all pay a fine.
After the bidding activity, the team with the most money left over wins the game.
