Objective

In this grammar activity "problem solvers" use modal verbs to give advise to "problem people."

Instructions

1. Divide your class into two groups of people - the "problem people" and the "problem solvers". Ask the "problem people" to come up with problems for the "problem solvers" to solve. If necessary, use the following list of modal verbs to help your "problem solvers" give advise.

CAN you ...
You COULD ...
You MAY have to ...
You MIGHT as well ...
You WILL have to ...
You SHALL have to ...
You SHOULD...
You OUGHT TO ...
You MUST ...
You NEED to ...

2. Get the "problem people" to seek help by explaining their problems to the "problem solvers". The "problem solvers" should do their best to listen and to give advise using modal verbs in the table outlined above. After the discussion, the "problem people" should move around the room and speak to five other "problem solvers."

3. Once the "problem people" have talked to five other "problem solvers", ask the class for the best and worst piece of advise they were offered.
