Materials: Computers and prepared text.

Objective

This game involves editing text that has all of the spaces and punctuations removed. The game is a creative approach to reading that will stimulate your students to be alert, to focus on syntax, punctuation and meaning to what otherwise might be difficult or boring reading material.

Instructions

1. Before class type a reading article into a word processor and remove all spaces and punctuations. Use reading material that your learners find fairly difficult. Your reading text should look something like this:

Before
for300yearsfromthe8thtothe11thcenturyadaringgroup
warriorsandexplorersknownasthevikingstooktheworldby
stormtheysetsailfromnorwayswedenanddenmarkinsearch
ofgoldlandandslaves

After
For 300 years, from the 8th to the 11th centuries, a daring group of warriors and explorers known as the Vikings took the world by storm. They set sail from Norway, Sweden, and Denmark in search of gold, silver, land and slaves.

2. During class have students work together in groups of threes, or one computer per student if there are enough computers. Tell students to edit, punctuate and add space to the text as they see fit. As students get stuck into their work, go around the class and help students deal with computer issues or with difficult words.
