Spelling Games

This page contains a collection of spelling games and activities that can be used for classroom teaching by English As a Second Language teahers and instructors. These ESL/EFL games can be used free of charge in any English as a Second Language classroom, or as a way to providing further language practice.

Alphabet Spelling - students must guess and spell words prepared by the teacher.

Backward Spelling Quiz - the class works together to guess a word that is spelt backwards.

Card Spelling - an game played in pairs or small groups using cards made from letters of the alphabet. Players try to form the most number of words.

Classroom Spelling Review - a game for reviewing new words. Learners compete in teams to correctly spell out each word.

Dictionary Definition - an excellent game for introducing students to new vocabulary and their definitions.

Hangman Spelling - a classic game for spelling reviews. Players try to guess the correct spelling of a word before been hung.

Letters of the Alphabet - a game that introduces children to spelling by associating words to a letter of the alphabet.

Spelling Review - a fun way of reviewing new words with your class. Students spell words one letter at a time until the whole word is spelt out.

Teaching Spelling - in this game the students are the teachers! Students compete to spell the most number of words correctly.
