Objective

Teaching Spelling is an activity where students take turns pretending to be the teacher for their group. Students compete within their groups to get the most number of words spelt correctly.

Instruction

Before class you will need to prepare a list of new words that you want your class to learn. Write out each word four times on pieces of paper.

1. Have the class form groups of four, and assign a number between 1-4 for each student in a group. Explain to the students that in this activity, they will need to take turns pretending to be the teacher for their group. Therefore each student should take turns being the teacher of their group.

2. Next, call the "teachers" to the front of the class and give them the pieces of paper containing words you want the class to learn. Explain to them the meaning of the word, and if them seem a little stuck, give them some suggestions on how to teach it. Allow the "teachers" to return to their groups, and tell them that they have only a few seconds to teach their groups how to spell the word.

3. On the "go" signal, give the students some time to teach their groups. Use your judgement on how long the students should teach.

4. When time is up, call out a number and have the students line up in front of the board. On your signal, the students should write out the word that they were taught all at the same time. A point is awarded to each student who correctly spells out the word. The student with the highest score in their group wins the game.
