Objective

Dictionary Definition is vocabulary activity that helps children learn new words. Students try to guess what a word is by listening to its given definition.

Instructions

1. A volunteer takes a dictionary and looks up for an unfamiliar word and it's definition. He/she reads out the definition to the class. If there are several definitions, read out the first and most obvious definition. If the class cannot guess the mystery word, read the second definition and so on.

2. After hearing the definition, the class has to guess what the word is based on the definition. The person who correctly guesses the word takes the dictionary and chooses the next mystery word.

Example
Mary starts the game and decides to choose the word "pearl". She reads the dictionary's definition as "a hard, white and lustrous spherical mass".

Everyone seems baffled and no one was able to guess the correct word. She decides to give the next definition: "highly prized as a gem and formed within the shell of an oyster". Before she finishes her sentence Tanaka guesses the word "pearl". He now gets to up and chooses the next mystery word.
