Objective
Hot Seats is both a vocabulary learning activity, as well as an excellent strategy for combating classroom fatigue and boredom. Players from each team sits in the "hot seat" and compete against each other to elicit a word from the person in the "hot seat" without saying what the word is.
Instructions
Prepare a list of vocabulary words that you would like to review with the class. This list can be anything from animals, to hobbies, to movies, to music titles and so on.
1. Divide the class into two groups, and draw up a score board for Team A and Team B. Setup two chairs in front of each group - these are the designated "hot seats".
2. The groups must now chose a member to sit in the hot seats. Players should sit facing their group, with their backs to the board at all times during the game.
3. When the groups are ready, choose a word and write it on the board. Keep the word covered with a sheet of paper or an old newspaper. When all eyes are on the board, give the groups the "go" signal!
4. Without saying the word or giving away spelling clues, members from team must try to elicit the word from the person in the hot seat.
Example: |
If neither player can correctly guess the word, you can go onto the next word without requiring the players to leave their seats.
The first person in the hot seat to say the word wins a point for their team. The person in the hot seat should now swap seats with another team member. Continue playing until all the words have been used up.
