Objective
The Odd One Out is a vocabulary practice game which requires students to identify an item that does not belong to a vocabulary group. Students go beyond mundane vocabulary practice, as they have to give explanations for their choice.
Instructions
1. On a piece of paper, prepare and cut out different groups of vocabulary words with an "odd one out". For example, you can have such words as "Farmer", "Cow", "Pig", "Chicken" and the odd word out could be "Pizza."
2. Divide the class into pairs or small groups. Ask students to identify the "odd one out" for each group of words, and to give an explanation for why they chose that word.
3. Next have students present their list of words. You can have other students agree or disagree as to why a word is the odd one out. If they disagree they should give reasons for their opinion.
Variations
Another variation of this vocabulary practice game is to use categories of related pictures instead of words. Divide the class into groups of 4 - 5 students each, and give each group 20 pictures. Make sure that each group receives a different set of pictures. Each group organizes their pictures into categories, with an odd picture for each category. Next have the class identify which categories have an odd picture out.
