Objective
Words to a Song is a writing activity that is played by listening to music. When players hear a line from the song they are listening too written out in front of them, they must grab the words before the other players can get to them.
Instructions
When selecting the type of music for this game, try to find something that has a good mix of voice and instrumental sounds. The mix of vocal and instrumental in a structured piece of music helps to create "learning hooks" to which new information can be added. Popular children songs such as the "ABC song" demonstrates the effectiveness of a piece of music that can be used as an aid in the learning process.
1. Select a song that the students have not yet learnt or heard before. Choose 10-15 words and write them on separate pieces of paper. For example, in the "ABC song" and "Old McDonald", you could select certain letters or animals in the song.
2. During class, go through the words and pronunciation with your class. Once the class becomes familiar with the words, stick the pieces of paper on a board with blue tack or tape.
3. Next divide the class into two teams, designate a starting line away from the wall and have the teams line. Play the song.
4. Students in front of the line must carefully listen to the music for the words on the board. When they hear the word, they must race to grab the paper from the board (students get really excited at this point!). They then go to the back of the line, and the next pair in line listens and waits to grab the next word. The team with the most word wins the game.
